Unlock Bootloader & Root Xiaomi Redmi 5: Xiaomi has successfully launched the successor to Redmi 4; the new and powerful Redmi 5. The previous version was very successful with over 8 million units sold and still counting. Now with Redmi 5; Xiaomi plans to repeat the same. If you are a proud owner of Redmi 5 and are looking to root your device; then you have come at the correct place. However, before going ahead to the process of rooting your Redmi device; please make sure that your device satisfies the following prerequisites:

Root Xiaomi Redmi 5 | Prerequisites/ Pre-requirements Before Rooting

  • ADB (Android Debug Bridge) and Fastboot must be installed.
  • Bootloader of your device must be unlocked.
  • Your Redmi must have a custom recovery installed.
  • Charging level must be at least 75% or above.

In case your device’s bootloader is not unlocked; you won’t be able to perform the rooting process. Follow the below-mentioned steps to unlock the bootloader of your device:

  • Please download and install ADB and Fastboot onto your Windows PC/ Laptop.
  • Now you need to apply for getting the unlock permission for your device. You can do the same at http://en.miui.com/unlock/

  • Post getting the unlock permission please login to your MI account from your Redmi device.
  • Now you require to activate the option of “Developer Options” by tapping few times on MIUI version.
  • Navigate to “Developer Options” and activate “OEM Unlocking” as well as “USB Debugging.”
  • Please go to  “MI Unlock Status” and click on “Add account & device.”
  • Now you are required to download MI Flash Unlock Tool and extract the same on your Windows PC/ Laptop.
  • Please run the tool. Kindly press the “Agree” button to accept the disclaimer that comes up.
  • On the very next page you will be asked to login with your MI account. Here you need to enter the same account with which you applied for unlock approval.
  • Connect your Xiaomi device to your PC and press Power On + Volume Down button together to boot your device into Fastboot mode.
  • Now, once your device is connected, an ‘Unlock’ button will become visible on the MI Flash Unlock Tool screen. Press the button.
  • That’s it post successful unlocking of the bootloader hit ‘Reboot’ to restart your device and you are done.

Now if you don’t have a custom recovery installed on your Xiaomi device; please follow the below mentioned steps to install custom recovery TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) onto your Xiaomi device:

  • You have already enabled the options of “OEM Unlock” and “USB Debugging” while unlocking the bootloader of your device. Plus you have installed ADB and Fastboot also on your Windows PC/ Laptop.
  • Please download TWRP Recovery image file for your Xiaomi Redmi 5.
  • Connect your Xiaomi device to your Windows PC using USB.
  • Open the folder where you have installed ADB and Fastboot and press Shift + Right Click. Select the option of ‘Open Command Window Here’ from the pop-up menu that appears.
  • Please move the TWRP recovery image file in the ADB and Fastboot folder and rename it to ‘recovery.img.’
  • In the ADB command window type ‘adb reboot bootloader.’ This command will reboot your device in to bootloader mode.
  • Once this is done type ‘fastboot flash recovery recovery.img.’ That’s it TWRP recovery will be installed on to your Xiaomi device.

Steps to Root Xiaomi Redmi 5

  • Get the SuperSu.ZIP file and transfer the same to the internal memory of your Xiaomi device.
  • Now you are required to reboot your device into recovery mode. For that first switch off your device and turn it on using the key combination of Volume Up + Power Button. Hold this combination for a while and you device will boot into recovery mode and you will see the following screen:

  • Tap on ‘Install’ and navigate to the location where you kept the SuperSU ZIP file on your Xiaomi device.
  • Select the file and provide your confirmation for the installation.
  • Once the installation process is over you are required to reboot your Xiaomi device.
  • That’s it! You have successfully rooted your Xiaomi Redmi 5 device.
